What is the Lee Swim?

The Lee Swim is one of the top open water swimming events in Ireland and everyone is welcome. The Lee River course runs through the centre of the City to maximise crowds – a great family event!
Originally held in 1914, the 2005 event drew 110 swimmers and crowds in excess of 5,000. Since then the event has attracted an average entry of 300 swimmers. This year the Lee Swim Organising Committee is planning for 400! Most of the swimmers compete for age group prizes (under 20, 20-24, 25-29….up to 80-84!), some raise money for local charities and a good number just swim for the enjoyment of the day and the cheers of family and friends.
Following the swim a very social atmosphere continues on the boardwalk outside the Clarion Hotel and various festivities into the night.

The swim is approx 2,000m (1,700m downstream and 300m upstream). The route is shown in the course map.

Safety

Proven safety measures will be in place, including coordination with Garda/emergency services and excellent safety boat support.
A detailed briefing on safety resources and procedures will be given just before the swim.

Charities

Cork Lions Club is the official charity of the Vibes & Scribes Lee Swim 2010. If you are planning to raise funds for charity, the Organising Committee urges you to consider donating at least part of the monies collected to Cork Lions Club. Since the re-launch of the Lee Swim in 2005, the Club has been an equal partner with Cork Masters SC in organising the event and has provided insurance cover, ensuring its establishment as an annual event, open to all competent swimmers. The Club’s commitment to insure the event in 2010 and future years is also very much appreciated.
